Hypnotherapy is a combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis. The psychotherapy in itself is extremely beneficial and its effects are enhanced by the application of hypnosis, which enables the subconscious mind to make beneficial changes. Nobody can make you do anything you do not want to – your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you.
Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is “done” to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.
it may be found to be helpful for those seeking relief from a range of problems and is used alongside a person’s own willpower and motivation to seek a desired goal. It is often used to help relieve anxiety, aid sleeping, help to address bedwetting, address attitudes to weight and help clients achieve behavioural change to stop smoking. It could also help with minor skin conditions that are exacerbated by stress and confidence issues, and may be used to enhance performance in areas such as sport and public speaking. Hypnotherapy may help people to cope with and manage the relief of perceived pain.
Hypnotherapy has been used with both adults and children to help manage the pain associated with irritable bowel. There is evidence to support its use in this condition for both adults and children and the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends the NHS should consider referring patients for hypnotherapy if their irritable bowel is persistent and has failed to respond to simple prescribed medicine.
What are the benefits?
Benefits include: Changing the way you think about a situation and reduce stress levels so whatever the issue is it becomes much more manageable, or in some cases disappears completely. Taking enjoyable exercise, which varies from dancing around your house to running marathons, fills your mind and body with serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine – which as you may know makes you feel really good. When you feel really good it is impossible to feel anxious and stressed – you can’t feel anxious and stressed and calm and relaxed at the same time!
